Sodaplay Transfigured was an installation of two computer terminals and one large scale projection showing a rotating selection of animated models created and submitted by users around the globe who have employed the Sodaconstructor interface to fill the Sodaplay database with over half a million objects. Sodaplay Transfigured's constantly changing gallery of models was displayed in a software application that animates models in a never-repeating random sequence. The audience was given the option to simply watch the ever-changing parade of models projected onto the gallery wall or to participate by designing their own unique creations by using the PC terminals in the space. Sodaplay Transfigured was first commissioned by the Australian Centre of the Moving Image, Melbourne, Australia, 2003. |
Sodaconstructor is an online multi-user tool for constructing animated objects and applying physical forces such as gravitational pull, springs and friction. The objects created are often delicate, beautiful and enigmatic, dancing, bouncing or stumbling across the screen. The animations are kept in a database and can be retrieved later, creating a global community of participants. Soda are a group of fine artists, researchers and developers who work together in order to support the development of individual and collaborative arts and research projects as well as sharing skills and resources to tackle ambitious, creative and innovative commercial projects. Over the years Soda's activities have converged on the creative applications of technology in Play, Learning and Art; for example, the BAFTA award winning Sodaconstructor exemplifies their belief in open ended creative play.
