rand()%lab was a presentation by the generative net.radio station, rand()%, applied to a gallery context. The installation used the laboratory as a metaphor for research and investigation into random number generation and sound. The exhibition featured new audio works by Tom Betts, Joe Gilmore and Alku. Numerous audio and audio-visual experiments were presented: the results of ongoing investigations into quantum random numbers, mutant Unix code and bio-acoustic research. The artists used sensor technologies and software agents to take signal feeds from plants, light, the quantum decay of beta particles and information systems. Visitors were able to listen to the rand()% net.radio live stream via headphone listening posts, and browse exisiting rand()% works which had a previously unseen accompanying visual element, including works by: Lia + Miguel Carvalhais: LMLB03

rand()%lab was a physical manifestation of the rand()% project which is a unique automated net.radio station streaming real-time generative music. All the audio is generated by software written by sound artists and programmers. Listeners hear sound; however the audio stream is not a sequence of 'tracks' but pieces of generative software that are launched, run and closed by the system. rand()% was commissioned in 2003 and launched at the Ultrasound festival in the same year. |
